New Video: Zumo Kollie
So often in popular music, a formula that has proven itself both marketable and lucrative is analyzed, synthesized and then resultantly over-farmed to the point of total creative exhaustion. At that point, music fans–or at least people who take music seriously– look up to modern musicians with an expression that conveys a simultaneous cry for something new and something real.
Here to answer the call in his Providence Friars crewneck and save those music adherents looking to the sky for a positive change is Zumo Kollie. The Providence emcee known around the Ocean State for being one of ‘the most meticulous artists we’ve ever seen,’ was introduced to //ApK in the Fall of 2010 and the raw talent and desire to create original, thought provoking music was immediately apparent. After a few recording sessions with the crew here and an exclusive performance at the //ApK 30 For A Cause event, his promise, as if it had come into question after ‘Zero Hour’ and ‘Times of Our Lives’, was indisputable.
This past Saturday, Zu Scott Fitzgerald released a track titled ‘Let Me Chill’ through his twitter and tumblr accounts. We’re not positive whether the track will appear on the album, titled Last Showing, or whether the track serves simply as the first course of what is no doubt going to be a well seasoned, nutritious and all around savoury meal.
‘Let Me Chill’ is nothing short of a song with attitude. The title, according to the press release we received and the nature of the lyrics transcribed on his Bandcamp page, is a literal response to the stress associated with building and album from scratch and essentially doing it solo. I guess you could say ‘Let Me Chill’ is a polite swat at the flies buzzing around Kollie’s head for the one and a half years he’s been labouring over the record. ‘In a nutshell, the shit is taxing, B,’ Kollie explained in the press release on Saturday.Save for the urban colloquialism, ‘B’ meaning young enterprising gentleman of undisclosed stature and intention, Zu isn’t joking about the work that comes with this latest project.
In addition to the boom bapping track ‘Let Me Chill’, the self proclaimed ‘Author of the head nod’ has just this very day released the above music video for one of the singles off Last Showing. The song is called ‘It Was On My Mind’ and it is–how do you say?– fucking outstanding. Shot and directed by camera wiz kid/Phillies fan Brendan H. Banks and produced by //ApK Media, ‘It Was On My Mind’ was filmed in our home town of ProvCity. Click play and check it out. Last Showing drops 6.11.11. Make sure to follow @ZumoKollie to stay in touch with dude about his work and insane shoe collection. Also make sure to follow @apkmedia for exclusive video, music and web content.
